The Lotus Pond Kolam — Thamarai Kulam

The Lotus Pond Kolam — Thamarai Kulam

There is something so calm about a lotus kolam at the doorway. This design is what I like to call my Lotus Pond. At the center, in a soft magenta square, blooms the main lotus — the heart of the pond. Around it, four smaller lotuses open towards the four directions, as if floating on water. The sharp blue arrows and white lines are the ripples that connect them all.

Why lotus in kolam?

In our tradition, thamarai is more than a flower. It stands for purity, prosperity, and Goddess Lakshmi. Drawing it at the entrance is a quiet prayer for abundance to stay, even when life gets muddy — just like the lotus that blooms beautifully from the mud.

Janmashtami Kolam

A Welcome for Little Krishna – Janmashtami Kolam at the Doorstep

This Janmashtami kolam at the entrance is more than decoration — it's an invitation.

The design features Lord Krishna's most beloved symbols: the bansuri (flute) and the mayil iragu (peacock feather). The flute represents divine music and love, while the peacock feather on Krishna's crown reminds us of beauty, humility and joy.

Tiny white footprints and flowers. These are Krishna paadam, the little feet of baby Krishna. The tradition is to draw these from the doorway leading inside, as if Bala Krishna himself has just entered the home, bringing blessings, happiness and prosperity.

Free hand kolam. Create even circle using a large bowl or plate.

Thalam Poo / Screw Spine Flower Kambi Kolam

This Talam poo Kambi kolam is more than decoration. It’s a daily ritual of welcome, patience, and positivity — inviting prosperity and good energy into the home. The graceful loops that weave around each dot without breaking symbolize continuity and togetherness.

The Fragrant Flower of Auspiciousness

Known as Thazhampoo in Tamil, Thalam Poo or Screw Pine flower (Pandanus odorifer / Kewda) is one of the most fragrant and auspicious flowers in our tradition.

With its long, creamy-white petals and intense, divine scent, Thalam Poo is considered very dear to Goddess Devi. It is a symbol of prosperity, purity and good fortune. In many homes in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, a single Thalam Poo is kept in the pooja room during festivals, especially for Varalakshmi Vratham, Navratri and Aadi Velli, as its fragrance is believed to invite Goddess Lakshmi and bring positive energy.

The flower is also used to make natural perfumes, garlands and for decorating the deity because its scent lasts for a long time. In Ayurveda, it is valued for its cooling fragrance.
